Court orders govt to take 6 Cashgate buses

The High Court in Lilongwe on Wednesday ruled that government should take six Cashgate buses bought during the reign of Dr. Joyce Banda.

The buses were confiscated from cash-gate convict Leonard Kalonga following revelations that the buses were bought from the money plundered at Capitol Hill.

High Court Judge Fiona Mwale delivered the ruling Yesterday, saying government has the power to take full control of the buses.

High Court spokesperson Mlenga Mvula confirmed of the development in an interview with the press after the ruling.

Mvula said the cash-gate cases will not be affected following the decision by the court to dispose off the buses, saying the judge looked into the matter critically before making the judgment.

The six buses have been at Lilongwe Police Headquarters for close to two years and the state wanted to use the buses as evidence in court.

But earlier, the state changed tune of the matter, saying the buses were losing value hence an application for disposal by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) deputy director Reyneck Matemba.
