ESCOM worker drowns at Nkula Pond: body recovered

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) intake attendant is reported dead after drowning in the Nkula pond while on duty on Saturday morning.

ESCOM officials have confirmed of the development in a statement posted on its official Facebook page but denied to reveal the identity of the deceased.

The officials said the development led to emergence load shedding carried out Saturday and Sunday.

“The load shedding is due to lowering down of the ponds at our Nkula Power Station in order to conduct a search and recovery exercise of the body of our member of staff who has drowned in the pond at around 9 o’clock this morning,” reads the statement.

Although ESCOM officials denied to reveal the identity of the deceased, Faceofmalawi has been reliably informed that the deceased is Mr. Chikonyo.

Mr. Chikonyo’s body was recovered on Sunday and will be laid to rest today.

“Thank you for all the sympathies over the loss of our staff member who drowned at Nkula pond in the morning of Saturday, 29th May 2016. His body was recovered yesterday and burial will take place today at his home village,” reads in part the statement.
