Former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi on Monday left the country for South Africa for his routine medical checkup.
The trip comes barely two days before his MK1.7 billion corruption case resumes at High Court in Blantyre.
Muluzi together with his personal aide Lyness Violet Whisky are being accused of misappropriating US$ 13 million of what the State had claimed was donor money meant for various government development projects.
His lawyer, Jai Banda has confirmed of the trip in an interview with the press.
Banda trashed the claims raised by some concerned citizens in the country that the trip is one of Muluzi’s tricks to have his case delayed, saying the trip won’t affect the case.
On Friday last week, Muluzi applied to court through his lawyer to have his case discharged following the recuse of lead prosecutor Reyneck Matemba, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) deputy director.
The presiding judge then adjourned the case to Thursday May 12 2016 to hear from the State on whether to have case discharged or not.
Meanwhile Malawians have accused the DPP administration for shielding Muluzi in the case.
