Rape convict claims he is a member of satanic cult: Slapped 18-years jail sentence

The Mzuzu Second Grade Magistrate court on 04 th April 2016 sentenced a form three student at Chibavi Community Day Secondary School to 18 years IHL for defiling a 8-year old girl, contrary to section 138 of the penal code.

The court heard the convict has been defiling the girl on several occasions between 2015 and 2016.

State Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Betty Msowoya told the court the mother to the victim and mother to the convict are sisters and that convict has been defiling the girl in her room since 2015.It was learnt convict used to sneak into victims room at night.

The issue came to light on 11th May 2016 when the convict wanted to have carnal knowledge with victim’s friend who denied. The victim’s friend then reported to her grandmother that even though she denied him,convict has been sleeping with her friend. (victim). When the victim was quizzed on the issue she admitted.

The matter was reported to Luwinga Police who refered the victim to Mzuzu Central Hospital.Medical report indicated defilement has been taking place.
Appearing before court the convict voluntarily pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court turned into further cathedral silence when the convict started to mitigate.The innocently looking student told the court he defiled in order to feed the spiritual demon which has been tormenting him since he was in standard five.

He said, defiling children was a fulfillment of the covenant he made when he joined satanic cult.

But when passing sentence, Magistrate Major Mbewe concured with the state that the convict deserved a stiffer punishment which would not only teach him a lesson but also deter other would be offenders.He then ordered the convict to serve a custodial sentence of 18 years IHL.

Meanwhile Police in the city is commending the court for the judgement.Such stiffer judgements are among other factors that have contributed to the remarkable decrease of defilement cases in the area the station serves.

The station is currently on record to have reduced defilement cases in the first quarter of 2016 by 43% compared to similar period in 2015.
The 18 year old convict Peter Mhango comes from Sonda village in T/A Mtwalo in Mzimba district.
