Kalindo ready to be arrested over nude protest against albino killings

Mulanje South Member of Parliament Bon Kalindo has said he is ready to be arrested for protesting naked come June 23, 2016 in the capital Lilongwe against albino killings in the country.

His remarks come following revelations that the country’s laws prohibit anyone from exposing his/her nudity.

According to Disorderly act (section 180) of the penal code, If any is found to be an idle and disorderly he/she is liable for a fine of K20 and may be sentenced to three months’ imprisonment if a first-time offender, and for a subsequent offence to a fine of K50 and six months’ imprisonment.

Speaking in an interview with Times radio on Sunday, Kalindo said he is not afraid of the arrest, saying he is fighting for poor people who are being hunted like animals.

“I am not moved even by an inch by all what people are saying against me. Others are even saying am doing comedy, well let it be as long as it is for the good of people with albinism am not shaken,” he said.

Kalindo says he knows the death sentence exists in the country’s laws but it has not been used for many years and wants it used on those convicted of killing people with albinism.

He also commended Judge Dingiswayo Madise of Mzuzu High Court for melting a life sentence to an albino hunter, saying that will serve as a lesson to others.

Meanwhile the naked protest which will be the first for Malawi has attracted mixed reactions with others labeling as meaningless.
