Fee hike demonstrations update: CSOs demand immediate opening of CHANCO (see photos)

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) today held peaceful demonstrations in all major cities in the country against fee hike by the University Council in all public Universities.

The demonstrations were characterized by the presence of heavy Police in all cities guarding the protestors who turn out in low numbers.

In Blantyre, the protest started from Kamuzu upper stadium to Blantyre City Assembly and the group which was outnumbered by Police officers was led by Comrade Mayuni while in Lilongwe the protest started from Kamuzu College of Nursing Round About.

According to a petition seen by FaceofMalawi delivered to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika through Blantyre City Council Chief Executive Officer, the protestors demand immediate opening of Chancellor College.

The CSOs also want the University fees should be revised downward, saying the recent adjustments is unreasonable.

Meanwhile today President Mutharika is meeting University of Malawi Student Union representatives to discuss the fees hike at Kamuzu Palace.
