Lilongwe Central Market gutted down by fire (see photos)

Goods worth millions have been destroyed in the fire that have gutted down Lilongwe Central market in the capital, leaving vendors hopeless.

According to information sourced by FaceofMalawi reporter, the fire started at around 3am while everyone is fast asleep.

Speaking in an interview with the press one of the eyewitnesses who rushed to the scene, Trouble Chakaka Nyirenda said he got the information from his friend from Mangochi calling him but he couldn’t believe it.

Nyirenda said he then decided to go to the scene to prove it and he was welcomed by huge smoke from the air.

He blamed fire fighters from Lilongwe City Council (LCC) for arriving at the scene very late, saying had it been that fire fighters responded in timed lots of goods could have been saved.

“A fire engine arrived when everything was razed down,” he said.

Meanwhile the cause of the fire is yet to be established as police are investigating the incident.
