Natural Resources College students protest fee hike: Police fires teargas

Police this morning used teargas to disperse angry students from Natural Resources College (NRC), a constituent college of the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) who were protesting against fee hike.

The students decorated the roads going to the campus with burning tyres and stones while others were chanting songs trashing the fees hike.

The students went further by pelting stones at any vehicle passing nearby the campus forcing the police to intervene by firing teargas at the students.

The University council announced the fee hike on Monday through a statement seen by FaceofMalawi, saying the fee hike, saying the fee hike is with immediate effect.

The council has pegged the fee for Degree Programme at NRC at MK 652, 500 from around MK250,000 while Diploma Programme as now pegged at MK367, 749.

The hike has also affected students under Open Distance Learning (ODL).
