Malawi National IDs launch called-off over Mutharika’s illness

Information sourced by FaceofMalawi indicates that the launch of the national identity card (IDs) scheduled for Wednesday in the capital Lilongwe has been shifted to a later date.

The launch was supposed to be graced by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika who arrived in the country on Sunday afternoon from United States of America where he went to attend the United Nation General Assembly (UNGA).

Spokesperson for the national ID project Norman Flatila confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

Flatila attributed the cancellation to logistical problems.

But inside sources have told this publication that the event has been postponed due to Mutharika’s illness.

When contacted for comments, State House Press Officer Mgeme Kalilani trashed the claims, saying the cancellation has nothing to do with Mutharika’s health.

Kalilani said Mutharika is fine and Malawians should not be worried.

Meanwhile human right activists in the country have pleaded with Mutharika to resign on health grounds.
