Mzuni students angry with Mutharika: To hold national wide demonstrations on November 30

Students from Mzuzu University (MZUNI) will hold national wide demonstrations on November 30 2016 over closure of the college following the expiry of the seven days ultimatum given to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

Mzuzu University was closed a month ago following the strike by lectures and support staff who are demanding 35 percent salary hike and students at the institution pleaded with Mutharika as their Chancellor to intervene within a period of seven days.

On Wednesday, President Mutharika came out of his cocoon to say that he is not responsible for the crisis rocking public institution of higher learning in the country.

” I know that some people are eager to point fingers at the head of state and Chancellor for every problem that arises in Universities. I am the ultimate authority and I don’t mind,” said Mutharika.

Mutharika’s statement has angered Mzuzu University Students Union Representatives who have since resolved to call for national wide demonstrations.

In a statement issued on Sunday signed (MUSREC) President Wazamaza Katatu, all the students including those who were supposed to graduate on 4th November 2016 to take part in the demonstrations.

Katatu said the demonstrations will be held in all major cities like Mzuzu, Lilongwe, Blantyre and Zomba.

According to Katatu, the demonstrations will be followed by vigil at Parliament building on the date to be announced soon.

“Its now clear and evident that the political line has sketched one song with same tone of taking the burden to council.

“we all know that, practically the matter can only be resolved only if there is a political will from the President and his government because council through its press statement indicated their hopelessness to handle the matter,” said Katatu.

He added: “If its not about the Head of state, then who?

Katatu said blamed Mutharika for lacking interest on the matter, saying as leader he could have been in the forefront in finding lasting solution to the matter.

Meanwhile government is yet to respond to the matter.
