Police recover vehicle stolen from MRA premises, suspects arrested

Police in Lilongwe have recovered a silver Toyota Hilux Twin Cab registration number BLK 9933 which was recently stolen from the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) premises in Lilongwe.

Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Central Region Police Sub Inspector Alfred Chimthere told the Malawi News Agency (Mana) Monday that the Police have since arrested Fulundiwe Banda, 37, and Simon Kamphata, 42, but the third suspect is still at large.

He said they also have impounded a blue Mazda Premacy which is suspected to have been used when committing the crime.

“Early indications show that the crime was organized because it is alleged that the suspects had visited the MRA premises to survey the area a day before stealing the motor vehicle on Thursday morning of March 2, 2017.

“The vehicle was recovered on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Chimwala Primary School along the Lilongwe/Blantyre road where it was abandoned by the third suspect of Mozambican origin who is at large,” Chimthere said.

He disclosed that the stolen vehicle belongs to an unidentified Catholic Priest and was at the MRA offices over nonpayment of duty.

Chimthere said investigations are underway to arrest the third suspect, but the two suspects are expected to answer charges of theft contrary to section 278 of the Penal Code and conspiracy to commit a felony contravening section 404 of the Penal Code.

Fulundiwe Banda, an Area 22B resident, hails from Thando village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Kalolo in Lilongwe while Simon Kamphata, an Area 24 resident, hails from Matapa village, TA Malili in Lilongwe-mana
