PP MPs received MK200, 000 each from Mutharika to reject electoral reforms bill

Information sourced by faceofmalawi indicates that Members of Parliament for the opposition People’s Party (PP) received MK200, 000 from President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to reject the electoral reforms bill.

PP MPs held a meeting with President Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace in the capital Lilongwe before the tabling of electoral reforms bill in the National Assembly on Thursday last week.

Although the agenda of the meeting up to now is not yet known, an inside source has told this publication that Mutharika gave PP MPs to MK200, 000 each to reject the said bills in the August House.

The source also told this publication that the MPs also received extra cash at Parliament.

But former People’s Party (PP) acting Vice President Uladi Mussa denied receiving the cash from President to reject the bill.

“No! no! We did not receive the said amount of money to reject the electoral reforms bill. Everyone voted out of conscience,” said Mussa in an interview with the press.

PP Spokesperson Noah Chimpeni has also rejected claims that PP MPs were bought by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to reject the electoral reforms bill.

Meanwhile President Mutharika accused Public Affairs Committee (PAC) of conniving with the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to overthrow his reign through the electoral reforms bill.
