Muslim Association of Malawi Asks Muntharika to Apologize over Anti-Muslim Remarks by Governor Paipi

The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has asked Malawi’s President Peter Muntharika to apologize over anti-Muslim remarks that were expressed by its Eastern Region DPP governor, Julius Paipi at rallies describing Muslims as evil and people who love violent related activities like war.

According to MAM, the remarks angered the whole Muslim community hence asking the president to apologize on behalf of the governor and also to have him disciplined.

Paipi is alleged to have made the remarks to deter voters from voting for a Muslim candidate in the 2019 elections so as to avoid voting for war.

The remarks also angered DPP’S Mangochi Campaign Director Wellington Mangulenje who announced his resignation on Sunday.

MCP’s Sidik Mia also took to Facebook showing disagreement with the governor’s remarks.

“For instance, Dr Bakili Muluzi is a Muslim. He was head of State for two consecutive terms. Did he cause war in the country?” queried Mia
He added: “Muslims are tolerant of other religions.

“I am working so comfortably with President Dr Chakwera, himself a Christian.

“You may wish to note that I even attend Christian gatherings when invited for their fundraising events and/or other important Christian ceremonies. The same applies to our Christian brothers and sisters, they equally attend our important functions when we invite them.

Meanwhile, the ruling DPP through its spokesperson, Francis Kasaila said the party is investigating Paipi over the remarks.

“The Party is investigating the alleged remarks and will take serious disciplinary measures on the accused if found to have indeed said these unfortunate remarks,” said Kasaila.

Paipi has since denied to have said the remarks backing himself that people who attended the rallies would have protested against him if he indeed had said that.
