Girl killed in road accident in Ntchisi

Police in Ntchisi have launched a manhunt for a minibus driver who hit and killed a ten-year-old girl on Tuesday and escaped from the scene.

Ntchisi Police spokesperson, Gladson M’bumpha, said the deceased, Catherine Mankhawazi, met her fate at Ng’ombe Trading Centre in the district along Ntchisi-Mponela road as she tried to cross it.

M’bumpha said the minibus, registration number NS3280, was being driven by John Kamanga going to Mponela from Ntchisi.

“The minibus which was over speeding, hit the girl causing head injuries in the process. She was immediately taken to Ntchisi District Hospital where she was referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital. Unfortunately, she died on the way to the central hospital,” said Mb’umpha.

The driver and passengers escaped unhurt but the minibus had its bumper and side lamp damaged.

Mb’umpha said the runaway driver is expected to answer a charge of causing death by reckless driving.

The deceased hailed from Ng’ombe Village in the area of Traditional Authority Malenga in the district.
