Food Prices Go Up

Center for Social Concern report indicates that there is an increase of food commodity prices within the cities and districts of the country, a development established in its May and June reports.

Maize which is a staple food for the country has risen in cities and district of the country.

According to the report, a 50kg bag of maize was bought at K5, 700 in the month of May and in June was at K6,500 in Lilongwe and surrounding markets.

The development is the same in Blantyre and Zomba while Mzuzu has the highest price of K7,000 for each 50kg bag of maize.

All these prices are much higher than what people from Karonga and Mangochi are getting as each 50kg bag of maize is sold at K5,000.

The increase of prices clearly contradicts what government is saying that the country’s economy is on track.

Center for social concern is a grouping of catholic priests mainly working in southern Africa which looks on people’s standard of living.
