Debate has ensued among Malawians over a decision by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to clear President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of any wrong doing with many suspecting foul play on the matter.

The K145 million payout to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was deposited in a bank account for which President Mutharika is a sole signatory.

ACB Director General Reyneck Matemba on Monday told the media that there is no evidence supporting the claims that Mutharika indeed benefited from the money donated DPP account by Pioneer Investment.

“Bank documents and other documents that we have, some of which were provided to us by the State President himself, clearly show that the ultimate beneficiary of the K145 million was the Democratic Progressive Party and not the State President,” he said.

But the reason given by ACB Director has attracted mixed reactions with many accusing Matemba of playing double standard on the matter.

One of the concerned citizens identified as Joshua Mphikule wrote: “How can a Muhlako wa Ahlomwe member Matemba effectively investigate another Muhlako and his own patron at that? Let’s all vote Chilima for this and many other cases of grand plunder by Mutharika and his cronies to be objectively and conclusively investigated.”

Concurring with Mphikule’s remarks Madalo Briton Zapelewela wrote: “stupid ACB .you can try to cover him but Malawian already knows the trueth about this matter.see you 2019.”

On her part Bester Singilet wrote: “He is the leader of that party, a sole signatory of the account and a commander in chief of the MPS where the money was stolen. ACB trying to be economic with justice.”

Meanwhile Centre for the Development of People (Cedep) Executive Director Gift Trapence has accused ACB of acting as a court of law on the matter.
