Mathews Chikaonda’s funeral to have military honor

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has directed that the late Professor Mathews Chikaonda be buried with full military honours, as a former cabinet minister.

Chikaonda who died on October 30 2018, served as Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor under former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi and in 2002 he was appointed as Minister of Finance and Economic Development.

This has been disclosed in a press statement released on Tuesday from the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) signed by Chief Secretary Lloyd Muhara.

According to Muhara, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Samuel Tembenu SC, will represent the Malawi leader at the burial ceremony in Tembetembe village, in the area of Traditional Authority Kachindamoto, Mtakataka in Dedza district, on a day to be announced.

The body of late Professor Chikaonda is expected to arrive at the Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, on a date to be announced.
