Chinese Businessman Escapes with a Suspended Sentence after Accidentally Shooting Zambian Teenager while Playing with his Gun

The Kitwe Magistrate Court in neighboring Zambia has slapped a nine month suspended sentence on a Chinese national who shot a shop keeper in Chimwemwe Township last year.

Resident Magistrate Malota Phiri last week convicted Geo En Ming, 43, on two counts of failure to take precautionary of a firearm and unlawful wounding.

This in a matter Ming, a Chinese national and businessman in Kitwe shot a 19 year old shop keeper in September last year while he was playing with his gun.

In the process, Roydah Mumba, 19, was shot in the ankle – a move that sparked riots in the Township.

When the matter came up for sentencing, Resident Magistrate Malota Phiri said that there was no intent on the part of the accused to cause harm and as such the court had taken into account that the accused compensated the complainant a sum of K 25, 000 and taken care of medical expenses.

Magirstrate Phiri also ordered that the firearm be forfeited to the state and handed over to the police who will decide on the license of the firearm.

“Pursuant to 5.37 of the penal code cap 87 of the laws of Zambia the public prosecution should forward the particulars of the conviction and sentence to the minister responsible for Home Affairs on or before January 9, 2019 in accordance with the provisions of the immigration and deportation Act to consider or determine the accused stay in the Country, ” he ruled.
