No by-elections in Dedza South

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has said it will not conduct by-elections for Dedza South Constituency due to the death of Patrick Themu who died on January 4, 2019.

According to a Press Release issued on January 9, 2019 in Blantyre, the Commission has stated that it shall not conduct by-election in the constituency because the current National Assembly shall stand dissolved by March 20, 2019.

“It would be implacable to hold by-elections for Dedza South on the basis that the National Assembly will dissolve on March 20, paving way for fresh elections scheduled for May 21, 2019,” the Statement reads in part.

Chief Elections Commissioner, Sam Alfundika has since extended the Commission’s deepest condolences to all members of the bereaved family and relatives of the late legislator of Malawi Congress Party and Malawi National Assembly.
