Mponela police in Dowa district is keeping in custody a 45-year-old witch-doctor for allegedly raping a woman as prescription to restore her marriage.
Mponela police public relations officer, Kondwani Kandiado has identified the suspect as Thom Binson who hails from Makala village in the area of Traditional Authority Mlonyeni in Mchinji.
According to Kandiado, the woman’s marriage fall apart some time ago such that her husband sent her out of the house and she went to live with her sister at Madisi trading centre in Dowa.
“While there, she was convinced to seek herbalist’s help so as to restore her marriage hence approaching the suspect. The suspect asked her to pay a sum of K1000.00 assuring assistance.
“The suspect also asked her to go to the herbalist house during the night so that they finalise the deal. At midnight, the victim was taken to the graveyard where she was asked to have sex with him for the herbs to work effectively and she was threatened that she would go mad or die if she refused,”explained Kandiado.
However, after some days she had experienced no change, a thing that prompted her return to him again. She was asked to pay an extra K2000.00.
“The witch-doctor also asked her to go to his house at midnight, a thing she never did and was asked to surrender her cellphone as she had no money. After noticing again that there was no change of heart from her husband, the victim informed her relatives who later informed the police hence the suspect’s arrest,”added the PRO.
Upon his arrest, he was asked questions and admitted to have had sex with the victim at the graveyard.
Meanwhile, the suspect is in police hands and will soon appear in court over charges of rape.
