Chilumpha shuns Presidential debates

Former President Dr. Cassim Chilumpha who is also Presidential torchbearer for Tikonze Peoples Movement on Tuesday shunned second round of the Presidential debates ahead of the forthcoming May 21 tripartite election.

Chairperson of the organizing taskforce Teresa Temweka Ndanga told the people that gathered at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) that Chilumpha confirmed of his participation  but did not show up for debate.

Chilumpha gave no any explanation for his absence. Earlier Chilumpha promised to avail himself in the first Presidential debate which took place on Friday involving Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Dr. Saulos Chilima and United Democratic Front (UDF) Atupele Muluzi despite him being not invited.

Wrote Chilumpha:  “I will attend and will participate even without invitation. I know someone who will not show up but is appearing in this poster. I will take his place!”.

Turning to yesterday’s debate, only three panelists namely; Professor John Chisi of Umodzi Party (UP), Mbakuwaku Movement for Development (MMD) President Peter Kuwani and Independent President Reverend Kaiya attended the debate.

The debates centered on three key issues namely; Health, Agriculture and corruption. The debate lasted for close to 3 hours and was hosted by Grace Malera, a lawyer by professional.
