Manad Demands for more Sign Language Interpreters

Malawi National Association of Deaf (Manad) has demanded for more sign language interpreters to facilitate easy access to information and telecommunication services for the hearing-impaired people in the country.

Speaking in an interview with Manad Information and advocacy officer Gabriel Luzu said since the organization conducted a sensational workshop on the matter no company has shown interest to their demands.

“Apart from existing Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and St Pius Catholic Church which have sign language interpreters, no company that attended the workshop has acted in our plea,” he complained.

He further added that the deaf in the country feel being left out in as far as communication and customer service is concerned.

“We are striving for a society in which the deaf enjoy equal opportunity in as far as communication and customer service is concerned, but up now we feel left out and missing out on important information that every citizen ought to have,” he said

In September last year, Manad conducted a sensational workshop for communication stakeholders on the need for telecommunication companies to have sign language interpreters in their respective institutions.
