EAM calls for fair, peaceful polls

The Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) has called upon various stakeholders to make sure that the election is conducted in a fair and peaceful manner.

Malawi goes to the polls on May 21, 2019 to elect a president, Members of Parliament (MPs) and Ward Councillors.

Speaking during prayers organised by the association in Mzuzu, prayer coordinator for EAM, Reverend Gray Kapanga of Christ Citadel International Church said stakeholders such as the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and political parties should make sure everything is done within the laws.

Pastor Kapanga said the prayers were aimed at seeking God’s guidance during the electoral period.

“We want a peaceful campaign period that’s why we are praying to God that there should be peace wherever people are campaigning.”

He has since advised political parties and followers to remain peaceful regardless of the outcomes.

Presidential aspirants are the incumbent Peter Mutharika for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Lazarus Chakwera of the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) who is being supported by Joyce Banda of People’s Party (PP).

Others are Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima with his United Transformation Party (UTM), Mutharika’s cabinet minister Atupele Muluzi who is United Democratic Front (UDF) torchbearer.

The list also include John Chisi of Umodzi Party, Peter Kuwani of Mbakuwaku Movement for Development (MMD) and Independent candidate, Reverend Kaliya.
