MEC Denies Chilima Claims, ‘No CCTV Cameras were stolen’

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has turned down United Transformation Movement (UTM) leader Saulos Chilima’s claims saying no Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras were stolen.

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa confirmed that there is indeed a break in at MEC’s office but no item is missing.

He however added that the matter has been reported to the police.

DPP must return the cameras – Chilima

Chilima made the remarks in Chitipa during his campaign whistle stops where he said the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) must return the cameras they stole.

“The DPP must return the cameras they have stolen from MEC offices,” Chilima said

He further added that DPP has the tendency of destroying things when it comes to elections mentioning DPP’s spokesperson Nicholas Dausi who is also the Minister of homeland Security saying he was the one who led the team that burnt down of MEC warehouse in Lilongwe.

“We are not surprised because it is the same DPP led by Nicholas Dausi that set MEC warehouse on fire in 2014,” he said.

He further challenged that if they have words with him they can meet him.

“If they want to sue me let them do so,” challenged Chilima.

Commenting on Chilima’s claims Dausi said answering him (Chilima) would be giving him what he want.

“We cannot be answering to everything that Chilima is saying, then it will not be campaign. Chilima has the right to speak what he wants. Let him continue,” Dausi said.

However, analysts have backed Chilima’s claims saying they are relevant considering the period the country is in.

“The revelation has come at the right time because we are going for elections,” Emily Mkamanga Mzuzu-based political commentator.

She added that these revelations will help people to know what exactly happened.

“Everybody is saying evil deed of what others have done. This is important because people are going to know what exactly happened,” she said.

University of Livingstonia political commentator George Phiri said Malawians must expect a lot from Chilima.

“Chilima is likely to make more startling revelations on the ills of DPP government especially on corruption,” he said. Meanwhile four have been arrested in relation to the development. ],`$|+
