Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on Sunday visited his supporters who were arrested last week at Maula prison.

MCP supporters last week took to the street to protest the outcome of the May 21 tripartite election which saw President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika being declared winner by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

Despite the protest being peaceful, the Malawi Police Service arrested 18 MCP supporters including newly elected MP for for Lilongwe City Centre Alfred Jiya.

“I stopped by Maula to tell the protesters-turned-political-prisoners that their courage in pushing for #ANewMalawi without fraudulent elections is not in vain.

“Meanwhile, I demand their immediate and unconditional release. Protesting against injustice is a human right and, at times, even a duty, but never a crime. The peaceful exercise of a right needs no permission, and any hindrance or discouragement thereof is itself unjust. I stand with all Malawians who want peace, but not without truth or justice,” wrote Chakwera on his official facebook page seen by faceofmalawi reporter.

Meanwhile MCP supporters have vowed to continue with peaceful protest until the truth come out.
