Man Dies, Soldier Injured in a Road Accident

A 32 year old man has died while a Malawi Defense Force soldier sustained injuries after being hit by a motor vehicle in Phalombe.

Phalombe police publicist, Innocent Moses, said that the accident happened on Sunday at Nyezelera Trading Centre along Chiradzulu – Migowi – Chiringa road.

He identified the deceased as Macfyson Chakhuta of Nyezerera Village in the area of Senior Chief Kaduya in the district while the soldier is Private Evance Kaliya from Moyale barracks in Mzuzu.

Moses said the accident involved a motor vehicle Registration Number BL 8703 Nissan UD lorry which was being driven by Chakana Makamba aged 42, of Nyezerera Village in the area of Senior Chief Kaduya in the district.

He said upon arrival at the scene of accident, the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp bend and hit the two pedestrians who were on their way to church.

Chakhuta was taken to Holy Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, while Private Kaliya sustained a fracture on the right leg and has been admitted to Zomba General Hospital.
