Mandela’s Daughter Causes Controversy in S.A over a Tweet

Daughter of the late South African icon Nelson Mandela who is also South Africa’s ambassador to Denmark, Zindzi Mandela caused controversy on twitter following a series of tweets on land.

In the #OurLand tweets, Mandela was targeting Apartheid, which is a system of institutionalized racial segregation that existed in South Africa and South West Africa from 1948 until the early 1990s in which among others, lands belonging to black people was being taken by the whites.

“Dear Apartheid Apologists, your time is over. You will not rule again. We do not fear you. Finally #TheLandIsOurs,” Mandela tweeted in one tweet which followed by another that read, “Whilst I wine and dine here ..wondering how the world of shivering land thieves is doing #OurLand”.

The tweets were met with numerous reactions, some from people who supported the views, others from people who were against them saying they were racial and uncalled for especially for a person of her caliber.

Responding to one of the tweets, transport minister Fikile Mbalula appeared to plead with ‘Mandela’ to withdraw her statements – a tweet that soon caught the attention of EFF leader Julius Malema who was in defendant of Mandela not to withdraw her statements.

TimesLive reports that by Sunday, Youth Day, lobby group AfriForum responded to Mandela’s alleged tweets, accusing ‘her’ of causing divisions among South Africans and calling for ‘her’ diplomatic recall.

The group’s deputy CEO Alana Bailey said ‘Mandela’s’ views on the land issue showed a lack of understanding of responsibilities as the country’s ambassador to Denmark.

The issue followed with a formation of #HandsOffZindziMandela meant to defend Mandela.

Meanwhile, there are still no reports yet if there has been an action yet for Mandela.
