Police in Chikwawa on Sunday arrested five people on suspicion that they assaulted a 32-year-old man whom they accused of stealing a 2-year-old girl.
The suspects, 3 men and 2 women allegedly assaulted Moses Yohane, leaving him seriously injured.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening at Dyeratu Trading Centre.
Yohane is said have patronized a kachasu joint and it later transpired that a child to the beer seller went missing.
The seller confronted Yohane alleging that he had abducted the girl.
He denied the accusations and immediately the suspect and other 4 family members descended on him.
Police rushed to rescue the victim before finding the child in one of the suspect’s houses.
On Sunday, police apprehended the five suspects and charged them with unlawful wounding.
The five Precious Chinomba, 28, Ken Mateka, 28, Anderson Kachamba, 20, Jane Mateka, 59, and Chifundo Chilim’sidya,19 and will appear in court on Tuesday.
