CSOs call off Lilongwe vigil

Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has called-off the two day vigil that started on Thursday to force Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah for failing to manage the May 21 tripartite election which saw President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika being declared winner.

HRDC Chairperson Timothy Mtambo announced this when he was addressing protesters who were holding a vigil at late Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda’s mausoleum in the capital Lilongwe.

Mtambo called on protesters to return to their homes in peace, saying protests will continue on Tuesday next if Ansah refuse to resign.

But this did not please most protesters who argued the vigil should continue until Mec Chairperson Jane Ansah resigns.

On his part United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Dr. Saulos Chilima asked Ansah to immediate resigns.

Chilima said Ansah’s failure to adhere to the calls will force Malawians to continue protesting in the streets of Malawi.

He further thanked everyone who patronized the demonstrations.
