Nkhatabay Council Chair Advised to Develop the District

Nkhata Bay District Commissioner, Rodney Simwaka, has challenged newly elected Nkhata Bay District Council Chairperson, Acran Medson Chenya of  United Transformation Movement (UTM) who is councilor for Tukombo Ward, to have a vision for developing the district.

Simwaka made the remarks Saturday during the district’s council meeting where members were taking oath of office and electing the council’s chairperson and the vice-chairperson.

In his remarks the DC advised the chairperson to have a vision and learn how to embrace the vision.

“As Nkhata Bay District Council Chairperson, you must have a vision and take us to your vision. In the process of taking us to your vision, accommodate people’s views continuously as you inspire the team,” Simwaka advised.

Simwaka said the chairperson’s accommodation of people’s views was vital for Nkhata Bay District Council to develop.

“There is information gap between the council and people out there. So, we need to engage the communities so that there shouldn’t be mistrust,” he said, adding that communities expect quality services from the district council.

“Communities expect effective facilitation on their developments from us as the council. They expect us to be responsive to their needs and they have entrusted us with the responsibility to better their lives,” added the DC.

In his acceptance speech, Chenya, a retired Primary Education Advisor (PEA), thanked the council members for their trust in him, saying he would do his best to facilitate development growth in the district.

“Let’s work together to develop this district. It is our district and we have to do our best to develop it,” Chenya said.

He was voted into office with eight votes after beating Ranwell Manda Chimoto, also of UTM who got five votes and Boma Ward PP Councilor Cyria Adamana Nyamwera who got three votes.

Nyemwera made it on vice-chairperson position after scooping nine votes, defeating Kavuzi Ward Councilor Patricia Longwe of UTM who got five votes, Sanga Ward Democratic Progressive Party councilor Agness Chembezi who got two votes and Mpamba Ward UTM councilor Joseph Khuni who got a single vote.
