Livingstonia Synod Condemns Introduction of Chichewa as a Compulsory Subject

Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP) Livingstonia Synod has condemned the introduction of Chichewa as a compulsory subject in the new syllabus.

This has been said by the Synod’s Secretary General Reverend Levi Nyondo, who argued that the development is biased as there are several languages and cultures int he country that need promotions as well.

“We have a lot of languages and cultures in Malawi that need to be promoted, so why Chichewa only?” asked Nyondo.

Nyondo further continued that the synody being one of the stakeholders was supposed to be consulted for its input before the implementation.

Commenting on the matter, Ministry of Education Science and Technology spokesperson, Lindiwe Chide said the ministry consulted all the concerned stakeholders across the country before its implementation.

“We had regional consultations and i believe the synod was among the key stakeholders, I am sure they were part of the process and they were in agreement with all the decisions made,” said Chide.

Chide added that a consensus was reach that Chichewa should be among the core subjects after wide range consultative with stakeholders.

However, some students from Mzuzu have expressed their concern on the development saying Chichewa has never been their choice.
