Drunk headteacher causes scene at exam collection centre

KENYA – There was drama on Tuesday morning in Bomet County when a school headteacher went to collect Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination papers while drunk.

Bomet County Commander Naomi Ichami who confirmed the incident said they arrested the teacher identified as David Ngerich.

Ngerich, who is the headteacher of Sonokwek Primary School in Bomet staggered early in the morning to the collection centre demanding to be given the examination materials.

Ngerich who caused a scene at the exams collection centre which is located at the Bomet County Commissioner’s office demanded to be served first.

The drunk headteacher shocked security personnel, government officials and fellow teachers who had arrived at the centre early in the morning at the collection centre.

Ngerich was arrested and detained awaiting to be arraigned in court.

Ichami said the teacher has been replaced and his roles were transferred to the centre manager to ensure exams continue smoothly.

KCPE examinations kicked off on Tuesday morning and over one million candidates will sit for the exams.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi had assured that enough security will be provided and that the Education Ministry has put in place enough measures to ensure exam materials reach examination centres on time.
