HRDC Threatens Parliament Shutdown If Mwapasa Approved Police IG

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has threatened to force a shutdown of the parliament should the house approve the appointment of Duncan Mwapasa as Police Inspector General this afternoon.

Minister of Homeland Security Nicolas Dausi is this afternoon expected to move a motion for approval of Mwapasa for the position.

The house is also slated to approve the appointment of Auditor General – Jose Nangan’tani.

However, their appointments have been the centre of confrontation between government and its critics.

But the HRDC, currently leading post-election demonstrations in Lilongwe has warned they will stage protests at the parliament of the members of parliament approve the appointments.

The grouping accuses Mwapasa of being compromised with DPP politics arguing he will be executing his duties with bias and prejudice.

Their call resurfaced recently as they accused the police of not being able to exercise crowd control in various protests across the major cities.

Previously, the grouping also stated the belief that Nangan’tani.is not experienced for the position.

Yesterday, the opposition members of parliament denied to hear the motions for the appointments accusing the government side of flouting the procedures for the presentation of the motion.
