CFTC fines Standard Bank MK100 million, FDH Mk200 million

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has slapped Standard Bank with a fine of MK100 million over failure by the bank to disclose material information regarding a customer’s loan.

Standard Bank is among six companies that have been fined for violating competition and consumer protection laws.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lilongwe, CFTC Chief Executive Officer Desmond Kaunda said the decisions were made during the 75th meeting held on 8 May 2026.

Kaunda said the fines are totaling to MK361 million while six other companies have been orderd to refund the consumers

The Commission adjudicated 14 cases of alleged anti-competitive and unfair trading practices, closing three at the preliminary stage due to lack of merit or early resolution.

According to Kaunda,Standard bank had unilaterally extended a three-year loan to five years due to a system error, leading to deductions beyond the agreed repayment period.

Meanwhile FDH Bank has received the largest penalty of MK200 million for misleading conduct and unconscionable practices related to Keyman insurance on a MK150 million facility.

The bank was found to have removed and altered insurance terms without disclosure, made unexplained deductions and denied indemnification after the Keyman’s death.

The CFTC has since ordered FDH to refund MK120.2 million plus interest, reverse overdraft charges and repay MK200,000 erroneously deducted.

Fertilizer supplier Nitro Phos Limited has been fined MK50 million for supplying defective CAN fertilizer that caused crop failure for farmers across multiple districts.

The Malawi Bureau of Standards confirmed that certain batches failed to meet nutrient and moisture specifications.

CTS Courier Services has been penalized with MK5 million after losing consumers’ items worth MK815,000 and failing to provide redress.

The Commission ordered the company to refund the full market value of the lost goods and the original courier charges.

Modern Dry Cleaners has been fined MK3 million for damaging clothes valued at MK1.46 million and offering inadequate compensation based on a contract clause limiting liability.

Man Allegedly Kills Wife And Child Before Taking Own Life In Thyolo

A 36-year-old man from Thyolo District, Pilirani Lunguzi, is alleged to have killed his wife and her one-year-old daughter before taking his own life by consuming a poisonous substance locally known as “Lindimu.”

According to Thyolo Police deputy spokesperson Blessings Rabson, the bodies of 22-year-old Zinenani Leonard and her child were discovered at Conforzi Tea Estate on Sunday.

Police investigations indicate that the couple had left home together on Saturday to collect bluegum poles before the tragic incident occurred.

A postmortem examination revealed that Leonard died from severe injuries, while her one-year-old daughter died from strangulation.

Authorities further established that Lunguzi allegedly took his own life by consuming the poisonous substance after the killings.

Leonard hailed from Muliko Village under Traditional Authority Ngolongoliwa, while Lunguzi came from Katundu Village under Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo District.

Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.

Three Arrested Over Motorcycle Theft Spree in Lilongwe and Dowa

Kawale Police have arrested three suspects, Ahmad Bakili (21), Chifundo Jacob (28), and Mayamiko Neverson (22), in connection with a series of motorcycle thefts committed in Lilongwe and Dowa districts.

Kawale Police Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Precious Mabvuto Phiri, said Ahmad Bakili was arrested following the theft of a motorcycle belonging to Christopher Bester.

“It is alleged that the suspect approached the owner pretending to be interested in learning how to ride a motorcycle. During the training session, he rode away with the motorcycle, leaving the owner stranded,” said Phiri.

He added that after his arrest, Bakili confessed to nine motorcycle theft cases allegedly committed using the same modus operandi, leading to the arrest of Jacob and Neverson, who are believed to be linked to the offences.

Phiri said police have connected the suspects to nine similar cases and investigations are continuing to recover the stolen motorcycles and identify other accomplices.

Bakili hails from Tawi Village, Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza District. Jacob is from Kapalamula Village, Traditional Authority Kwataine in Ntcheu District, while Neverson comes from Mtandire Village, Traditional Authority Njewa in Lilongwe District.

78 Inmates Sit for 2025 PSLCE in Malawi Prisons

The Malawi Prison Service has disclosed that a total of 78 inmates are sitting for this year’s Primary School Leaving Certificate Examinations (PSLCE) in prison facilities across the country.

The candidates are writing their examinations at Zomba Prison, Blantyre Prison (Chichiri), Bvumbwe Young Offenders Rehabilitation Centre, Lilongwe Prison (Maula), Kachere Female Prison, Mzuzu Prison and Mzimba Prison.

Prison Service spokesperson Steve Meke said that of the 78 candidates, 68 are male while 10 are female.

Last year, a total of 58 inmates sat for the PSLCE examinations.

Nationally, 254,486 Standard 8 learners have registered for this year’s PSLCE examinations.

Man Arrested For Impersonating Medical Practitioner and Illegal Possession of Medical Equipment

Kawale Police through its lower formation of Area 23, have arrested a 45-year-old man, Hussein Majawa, for allegedly personating a medical practitioner and being found in possession of medical equipment suspected to have been stolen.

Kawale Police Station Spokesperson Mabvuto Precious Phiri said the suspect approached a 74-year-old man, Martin Chisale, who has long-standing eye and leg ailments. Majawa allegedly introduced himself as a qualified medical practitioner operating a private hospital in Area 36, Lilongwe.

Using this false representation, the suspect offered treatment to the victim and later demanded K60,000 for the services rendered. However, instead of improving the victim’s condition, the treatment reportedly worsened his health.

The matter was reported to Area 23 Police Unit, prompting detectives to launch an investigation. The operation led to the arrest of the suspect at his residence, where officers also recovered various medical equipment and drugs whose ownership and source are yet to be established.

Hussein Majawa hails from Kapule Village, Traditional Authority Kaphuka, in Dedza District.

Investigations are continuing, and the suspect is expected to appear before court to answer charges related to personation and possession of suspected stolen property.

20-Year-Old Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Seven Cows in Dowa

Police in Mponela, Dowa District, have arrested a 20-year-old man, Jonasi Felisoni, on suspicion of stealing cattle worth K6.3 million.

According to Mponela Police spokesperson Macpatson Msadala, the suspect allegedly committed the offence on June 5, 2026, at around 11 a.m. at Nambuma Cattle Ranch.

Msadala said investigations revealed that at about 7 a.m. on the same day, the cattle owner, from Kachetechete Village under Traditional Authority Kayembe, released seven cows from his kraal and entrusted them to a herdsman, who took them to graze at the ranch.

At around noon, the herdsman discovered that the cattle were missing and alerted fellow herders. A search operation was immediately launched, leading to the recovery of the seven cows in another village.

Police subsequently arrested Felisoni in connection with the incident.

Felisoni, who comes from Makana Village under Traditional Authority Wimbe in Kasungu District, is expected to appear in court soon to answer a charge of cattle theft.

Fake Reserve Bank Official Arrested For Stealing Cement And Lime In Mzuzu

Police in Mzuzu have arrested a 34-year-old man, Warning Banda, for allegedly posing as an official from the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) to obtain building materials worth K480,000 through deception.

According to Mzuzu Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Sergeant Edson Chipeni, the incident occurred on June 5, 2026, at around 8:00 a.m. at Sonda Market in Mzuzu City.

Chipeni said Banda went to a hardware shop owned by Dalira Kumwenda and claimed he had been sent by Reserve Bank officials to collect 10 bags of cement and two bags of Ndola lime.

Believing the request to be genuine, the shop manager released the materials after recognizing the name of an RBM official based in Mzuzu, without verifying the claim.

The fraud came to light when the shop owner later contacted the RBM official regarding payment and was informed that the bank had not sent anyone to collect the goods.

The matter was reported to Mchengautuwa Police Unit, and while officers were handling the complaint, they received information that a man was attempting to use the same trick at another shop in Kaviwale.

Police swiftly responded and arrested the suspect. Officers recovered all 10 bags of cement and two bags of lime taken from the first shop, as well as an additional bag allegedly obtained from the second shop.

Mkasa K!lled While Confronting Suspected Sugarcane Thief In Nkhata Bay

Police in Nkhata Bay have arrested a 38-year-old man, Jordan Mkandawire, in connection with the death of a security guard at Limphasa Sugar Estate.

Nkhata Bay Police deputy spokesperson Devoter Mithi identified the deceased as 54-year-old Yakobo Mkasa, a guard employed at Limphasa Sugar Estate in Kavukuka Village.

According to Mithi, the incident occurred on June 5, 2026, while Mkasa was on duty at the estate.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Mkasa allegedly caught Mkandawire stealing sugarcane and attempted to stop him.

In response, the suspect reportedly attacked the guard with a sharp object, inflicting a severe wound to his leg.

Fellow workers rushed Mkasa to Nkhata Bay District Hospital for treatment, but he later died while receiving medical attention.

Police Officer Reportedly Arrested In Chikwawa Over Illegal Charcoal Transport

A police officer based at Blantyre Police Station, holding the rank of Sub-Inspector, has reportedly been arrested in Chikwawa after being found transporting 36 bags of charcoal in a Malawi Police Service vehicle.

According to a source at Nchalo Police Station who spoke on condition of anonymity, the incident occurred on the night of June 4, 2026, at around 10:08 PM along the M1 Road near Kamuzu Bridge.

The source alleges that forestry officers stopped and searched a 15-tonne blue Mercedes-Benz truck, registration number MP 2615, belonging to the Malawi Police Service. During the inspection, officers reportedly discovered 36 bags of charcoal concealed in the vehicle.

The police officer allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation or documentation for the charcoal, leading to his arrest.

Sources further indicate that the truck has since been impounded and is being kept at the Lengwe National Park offices in Chikwawa together with the seized charcoal as investigations continue.

At the time of the incident, the officer was reportedly accompanied by a civilian woman.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Four Arrested In Chikwawa Over Illegal Charcoal Worth K11.2 Million

Police in Chikwawa have arrested two men and two women for allegedly being found in possession of charcoal valued at K11.2 million without valid documentation.

The suspects have been identified as Elizabeth July, 30, Ireen Hassan, 31, Patrick Damiano, 40, and McFarlane Winason, 41. They were arrested on June 4, 2026, at the Thabwa roadblock while travelling from Chapananga to Blantyre.

According to Chikwawa Police deputy spokesperson Chancy Mfune Zare, the suspects were travelling in a Hino truck registration number CK 10749.

Zare said officers manning the roadblock initially discovered 38 bags of charcoal concealed among bags containing plastic materials. A further search revealed that all the bags that appeared to be carrying plastics also contained charcoal hidden inside.

Police suspect the charcoal was being transported illegally as the occupants failed to produce the required documentation.

July and Hassan come from Mtombondera Village, while Damiano and Winason are from Changoima Village under Senior Chief Chapananga in Chikwawa District.

The four are expected to appear before court to answer charges related to the illegal possession and transportation of charcoal.
