Malawi Church body prays for peaceful demonstrations

Bishop Joseph Bvumbwe

Lilongwe – Malawi Council of Churches says it is disappointed with governments failure to engage in dialogue in order to resolve problems that are rocking the southern African nation. In a statement issued on Monday, the council says, “the Malawi Council of Churches is disappointed that the nation and leadership have not engaged in contact and dialogue as a way of finding solutions to the critical issues facing our nation. Signed by chairperson, Rt. Rev Dr Joseph Bvumbwe and Secretary General Rev Dr Osborne Joda-Mbewe the council says it has tried to seek audience with the highest office without success “While the Malawi Council of Churches would have wished that there were more round table discussions in order to resolve the outstanding issues, we nevertheless urge all demonstrators to avoid resorting to violence or impinging at other people’s rights as they demonstrate,” the leaders of the country’s Christian religious body say.

The statement further says, “The Malawi Council of Churches would like to remind all parties involved as well as the church at large of the power of prayer in finding lasting resolutions to critical issues the nation is currently facing. “We must all be reminded that God in His Sovereignty loves Malawi and is in control of events taking place in our nation and that at last, we shall all be accountable for our actions to Him. Peace is costly, and we must safeguard it at all costs.” It closes by urging urge all Member Churches to engage in meditations and prayer at different levels in all places and at all times so that the compelling reasons for demonstrations are resolved amicably.
