Zambia/Malawi: Women’s Squad Ready to Take On Malawi

THE Zambia women soccer team has intensified training ahead of Saturday’s 2012 CAF Africa Cup preliminary round qualifier against Malawi at Nkoloma stadium in Lusaka with coach Enala Simbeye confident of an outright victory.

Simbeye said in an interview after a training session at Nkoloma stadium yesterday that the team was ready to take on Malawi because the technical bench had done its ground work to ensure the team is in good shape.

She said the coaching bench had effectively worked on the team’s weakness observed like failure to score and lack of match fitness when the team just regrouped.

The coach expressed happiness with the player’s fitness and that her lasses had been intensively equipped both physically and mentally to take on a much-fancied Malawian side that is expected in the country tomorrow.

Simbeye said she was happy that the scoring problem had been worked on as it was the desire of the team to score as many goals as possible in a bid to have an easier return second leg in Malawi.

She said the players had put in their level best during training, but sadly some players would have to be dropped tomorrow when she names her final squad to engage in battle against the fierce eastern neighbours.

“We feel we have done most of what we saw was a problem with the team, especially scoring and shooting from afar. I am happy that the girls managed to score during the friendly games we have played. So far so good, we are focused on winning the match,” she said.

She has, however, advised her players against underrating Malawi because they were a good side coming to Zambia for a victory.

Malawi will host Zambia on January 28 with the winner these two-legged encounters progressing to play South Africa in a same format to qualify to the tournament to be played in October.
