Members of Gule Wamkulu Attack Students

KASUNGU: Members of Gule Wamkulu were reported as causing disturbance at Mphommwa Community Day Secondary School.

Kasungu police senior assistant commissioner John Nyondo said Gule Wankulu cult members were allegedly throwing stones at the students.

Police have three Gule Wamkulu teenagers in custody for the alleged incident.

“Three masked teenagers in Gule Wamkulu regalia stormed the school and started throwing stones at students at the campus,” said Nyondo.
Some of the male students from the school attacked them and arrested them.
“The students handed over the three members of Gule Wamkulu to Mphomwa community policing,” said Nyondo.

Police have identified the suspects as Yeremia Mwale, 17, and Chinsinsi Nyirenda,15, of Chindevu village and Temwa Nyirenda,15, of Mkulama village.

They are all charged with breach of peace.

Nyondo has advised people not to abuse customs to infringe on people’s right.

In Chewa tradition, Gule Wamkulu is highly respected as they claim is an ancestral dance.

Late last year, other members of Gule Wamkulu came into conflict with health workers affecting operations at Bua Health Centre in Kasungu.

Few weeks ago some members of Gule Wamkulu in Ntchisi were arrested for allegedly kidnapping and attacking three girls. The Gule Wamkulu members claimed that it was a part of an initiation ceremony.—Zodiak
