NKHOTAKOTA: Two men and two women are in police custody at Nkhunga Police station in Nkhotakota district on allegations that they killed a man through witchcraft.
Nkhunga police publicist, Sergeant Labani Joseph Makalani said the four have been arrested in Matawamba Village in the area of Senior Chief Kanyenda.
The four Mr. Shaibu Katutu, Mr. Tamimu Mdutu, Mrs. Yazidu Mdutu, Mrs. Mwanyameni Kowelani all aged between 50 and 80 were arrested on Monday January 9 following death of Mr. Sefu Kachulu within the area.
Sergeant Makalani says three of the suspects Mr. Tamimu, Mrs. Mwanyameni and Mrs. Yazidu Mdutu have been arrested on allegations that they hired Mr. Shaibu Mdutu to kill Mr. Kachulu through witchcraft.
It is also alleged that the deceased’s six-year-old son disclosed to have been taught witchcraft and that was given some charms to bewitch his father.
Sergeant Makalani added that Mr. Shaibu Mdutu admitted before the police that he bewitched the man through witchcraft as he was hired to do so.
The deceased Mr. Sefu Kachulu died due to a swollen belly.
Meanwhile a case of practising witchcraft has been opened against the four as investigations into the matter are still underway.
Mr. Shaibu Mdutu hails from Mussa village while the other three hail from Matawamba village in the area of Senior Chief Kanyenda in Nkhotakota.—Zodiak
