Malawi Library Association (MALA) calls upon government for assistance

Malawi Library Association (MALA) has called upon government to help in the registration of the association, which has been ignored for long time to improve library services, the Face Of Malawi has learnt.

In an exclusive interview, MALA President Fiskani Ngwira told the Face Of Malawi that government should intervene to finalize the MALA registration as soon as possible to improve MALA services in the country.

“It is high time now for government to help in the finalizing the MALA registration, which has been overlooked for long time to improve library services in the country.

“The association will encourage the establishment and development of libraries, archives, and documentation and information centers and unite people and organizations engaged in library services as well as promoting library profession among others,” he said.

Ngwira declared that the association will be launching its website this month to help the association in terms of communication.

“We are launching our [MALA] website this month that will improve visibility of the activities of MALA both local and international that is going to act as a platform where events will be publicized to the general members of the association,” he said.

MALA President added that the association would further promote Malawi’s growth and development strategies, as information personnel will help government to disseminate information regarding the Millennium Development Goals.

Harrison Ken of the United Kingdom, who came and lobbied government to start the association, founded MALA in 1976. While it was inoculated in April of 1977, up to now the registration has not yet been finalized.
