Miss Malawi eyes Miss World pleads for assistance

Miss Malawi Suzan Sonia Mtegha is pleading for funds from well wishers to enable her participate in the 62nd edition of the Miss World 2012 event.

The pageant will be held on August 18, 2012 in China and the Malawi Queen has been listed as one of the participants according to the pageant’s website.

An in an interview with the media, Mtegha asked government, the corporate sector and Malawians at large to help her raise funds to pay for the license, air ticket and other necessities needed for her participation at the global event.

“My humble plea to the public is to assist me with financial support for my trip to participate in this year’s Miss World. I’m supposed to leave for Mongolia around the 15th of July but up to now my managers have failed to raise funds to pay for the Miss World license,” she said.

“According to my knowledge, this licence should have been paid for some months back. I had no knowledge of licence fees, Ionly found out three weeks back,” said the 24-year-old queen.

She said her air ticket will cost about 1,350 pounds via Ethiopian Airways while the license fee will cost her $1000.

“Iwill also need an allowance and new set of clothes including five dinner dresses for the different events there. That alone excluding air ticket and licence fees is about MK400,000,” she said.

During the event, 2011 winner Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela will crown her successor. The contestants will visit to Hong Kong, Sanya and Shanghai.

Since she was crowned as Miss Malawi, Mtegha has embarked on different charitable activities. She recently conducted a big walk in which she raised funds to buy jerseys and shoes for underprivileged school going children between the ages of five and 10 years.

She also planted trees, visited Makande Prison in Thyolo and gave the prisoners a motivational talk on top of launching Feed the Children campaign at Likwezembe Primary School in the district.
