Govt condemned for blaming opposition on security woes

Date:

Human Rights activist Undule Mwakasungula has condemned the authorities for blaming opposition leaders for the increasing crime rate instead of solving the problem.

The country has been experiencing a spate of armed robberies, murders and house breakings a development which has seen people living in fear.

And Home Affairs and Internal Security minister Uladi Mussa, speaking at a press briefing in Blantyre, blamed the recent deterioration of security on the former ruling DPP for sponsoring its youth cadets to carry out criminal activities to discredit President Banda’s administration.

However, Human Rights Consultative committee Chairperson Undule Mwakasungula said time has come for the Joyce Banda administration to prove its capabilities in providing security for its citizens including business interests across the country.

Said Mwakasungula: “A blame game will not assist matters but practical action is needed if citizens are to have trust in government’s security system and live peacefully.”

He suggested that if the Police officers are having problems to contain the situation alone, it was proper to engage the services of soldiers from the Malawi Defence Force in the short term to beef up security, adding that the government is mandated at all cost to provide security to its citizenry.
