Human Rights activists demand speedy arrest of July 20 killers

Malawi’s Human rights activists are putting pressure on the authorities to arrest and put on trial police officers responsible for the killing of 20 people during pro-democracy protests on July 20 in 2011.

This follows concerns from the public and family members of the victims as no action has been taken so far.

A commission of inquiry report on the matter recommended that the law enforcers involved in the shootings and other people engaged in the violence during the protests should be brought to justice.

During the memorial service marking one year anniversary of the protests, last month, President Joyce Banda assured Malawians that her government will ensure that those responsible for the killings should face justice.

The newly appointed commissioner of the Malawi Human Rights Commission Benedicto Kondowe says they are expecting the government through its agencies to handle the issue with the speed it requires.

Malawians took to the streets last year forcing the government of the late president Bingu wa Mutharika to address economic and social problems that rocked the country.
