Malawi Housing Corporation worried over land encroachment

Malawi Housing Corporation has complained that it is losing revenue because most of its land is being encroached especially in due to land encroachment, especially in Lilongwe.

MHC spokesperson Ms Ernestina Lunguzi told ZBS that the corporation has lost over 700 hectares of land in which people have built substandard structures.

“The most worrisome thing is that some of those structures belong to some people who are in authority and not the poor,” she said. “This has further disturbed our development plans.”

She however warned that MHC will to it that law takes its course an all the squatters.

In Lilongwe most people in Areas 25 and 49 have encroached into MHC land.

In August the corporation demolished over 160 houses which were built on its land in Lilongwe’s area 49.
