Muluzi corruption case adjourned to November 15

Former Malawi president Dr. Bakili Muluzi’s corruption case has been adjourned again because the accused is still in a South African hospital.

Dr. Muluzi underwent a medical surgery, a development that also forced him to miss the burial of his mother.

According to the Director of Public Prosecutions, Bruno Kalemba the case will continue on November 15, 2011.

“The court was this morning informed that the former president underwent an operation in South Africa and a team of surgeons will conduct a post surgery review tomorrow (October 18),” said Kalemba.

“A report will on his condition will be presented to the court.”

When the case resumes next month it will review the medical report and set dates for trials, added the Director of Prosecutions.

The court in July set a three week period from October 8 to October 26 for trials where state witnesses were scheduled to continue giving their testimonies. This adjournment is the second this month alone.

Dr. Muluzi is accused of corruptly diverting government K1.7 billion funds into his personal account and the purchasing of vehicles worth K200 million.

He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges
