Kanyenda survives car accident

Flames striker Esau Kanyenda’s team, Polokwane City Club, was involved in a car accident on Sunday evening as they were coming from a game against Atlie FC formerly FC AK.

According to SABC, four players died on the spot after the bus the team was travelling in collided with another bus at Nobody near Polokwane in Limpopo.

The bus collided with another car at a four-way stop and the other bus then slammed into it, causing it to overturn.

Kanyenda was among the 23 other players that were taken to Mankweng Hospital and treated as outpatients.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said he was liaising with South Africa authorities on the issue.

“Esau sustained minor bruises and was one of the people treated as outpatients,” he said.

Polokwane City, formerly known as Bay United had drawn 1-1 with Gauteng based Atlie FC before the accident.

Meanwhile, condolences had been pouring in for the victims.

“Our condolences go to the families, especially the families of the deceased. Those who are injured, we are with them in our thoughts and prayers,” Premier Soccer League(PSL) spokesperson Connie Motsumi said.

The names of the victims had not yet been made public, but according to SABC, they were all less than 25 years old.
