Malawi whacked by Rwanda 2-0 at CECAFA

Malawi continue to shoot blanks as they fell to Rwanda 2-0 on Monday in a Group C match in the ongoing Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Kampala, Uganda. They have failed to score in three consecutive competitive matches.

Rwanda, who came second to Uganda in last year’s tournament, netted the first goal in the 42nd minute through Jean Baptise Mugiraneza, who converted after a great run and cross from Mwemere Ngirinshuti.

Malawi, who are a guest side in the tournament, pressed for an equaliser and they should have got it but Joseph Kamwendo blasted two great chances over the bar.

Rwanda 1 1 0 0 2 0 2 3
Zanzibar 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 1
Eritrea 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 1
Malawi 1 0 0 1 0 2 -2 0

Rwanda made the game safe late on when, following a swift counter-attack, skipper Haruna Niyonzima fired in a long shot from outside the box that left Malawian goalkeeper Charles Swini with no chance.

The win put Rwanda in top position after the second game of the group saw Zanzibar play out a goalless draw with Eritrea.

Malawi remain at the bottom with nought points.

Malawi also shot blanks against Ghana on both home and away legs in the African Cup of Nations 2013 qualifiers. Goals are becoming as scarce as forex and fuel in this country of mudfish.
