Over 100 thousand admissions are said to be registered at Queen Elizabeth Central hospital, a referral hospital for the southern region of Malawi every year, a figure which is way too much compared to the financial support the hospital receives to serve the public.
Hospital director Dr. Andrew Gonani disclosed this when Carlsberg Malawi donated medical equipment to the hospital worth $ 3000, equivalent of close to K 97 million.
“The hospital treats over 450 thousand outside patients annually, with 500 surgical operations on a weekly basis so you can see the burden that we have here,” explained Dr. Gonani.
He added: “The donation has come at the right time when the hospital is receiving thousands of referrals cases and admissions from various hospitals in the region.”
The medical equipment will be used for surgical, anesthesia, laboratory services and other general health activities.
He hailed Carlsberg Malawi for responding positively and engaging Malawian doctors in procuring the equipment from America, saying this will drastically improve health care delivery.
Speaking when handing over the medical equipment on Wednesday, Carlsberg Malawi chief executive officer Mr. Abel Chanje said the aim of the aid was to ease the burden that hospitals going through when providing quality health care.
“We realized how tough it is for the three referral hospitals of Kamuzu, Mzuzu and Queen Elizabeth central hospitals to effectively treat patients, this is why Carlsberg Malawi engaged some doctors in the country to procure medical equipment from America,” said Mr. Chanje.
“So far three consignments of medical equipment have since been delivered to all the three referral hospitals worth $ 830 thousand (about K 267 million),” added the Carlsberg CEO.
