Malawi Telecommunications Limited(MTL) hires new CEO

Malawi Telecommunications Limited has hired a new Chief Executive Officer, Gavin Jeffery, who reported for duties in October.

In an exclusive interview on Friday, Jeffrey said he has over 20 years experience in the telecoms sector mostly in developing markets.

“I have been working in telecoms for over 20 years, initially in finance roles but since 1994 I have served primarily in chief executive and managing director roles.

“Most of my experience has been in developing markets, ranging from Afghanistan to Kosovo, at times when the market was either a completely a green field or moving from a government owned entity with a monopoly to a market driven environment,” said Jeffery.

He said he brings to MTL vast management experience of moving state owned enterprises into effective and competitive positions against new market entrants.

“The basic quality we need in MTL to achieve that is to ensure that everything we do is aimed at customer service. If we drop away from that standard then we are not maximising our opportunities as a business.

“The main task that I see is to build on the work that has already been completed in MTL to make us a single team that is truly customer focused and that way driving value for the business,” said Jeffery.

He said MTL will continue to be a reliable company but we will become increasingly responsive to customer demand to match and improve with the changes in the industry.

According to its website, the company employs approximately 926 employees and offers a wide range of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) based products and services.

The company also provides fixed wireline and fixed wireless voice and data products and services to residential and business customers.
