Likuni Hospital sends SOS

Likuni Mission Hospital in Lilongwe has said there is limited privacy for female patients in its maternity labour ward and it needs urgent refurbishment.

The remarks were made by the hospital’s Principal Administrator, Sister Agnes Lungu on the sidelines of a charity event at the hospital organised by People’s Party’s Orange Partners wing over the weekend.

The labour ward at the hospital lacks enough rooms with expectant women sharing a single block separated by curtains.

Lungu said they would like to see the loabour ward improved so that the dignity of women is restored.

“Since we are struggling financially, we appeal to well-wishers to help us improve our labour ward. We want it to ensure privacy so that it befits women’s dignity,” she said.

In addition, Lungu said the ward has ordinary beds which are not very comfortable to the women.

She urged the government which is currently championing safe motherhood in the country to consider coming to the hospital’s rescue too.

The ruling party wing also presented Christmas gifts to women in the maternity ward.

Commenting on the gifts, the hospital administrator said they will help reduce problems which both the hospital and the women were facing.

During the event, Orange Partners members donated buckets, soap, packets of sugar salt to patients and also donated detergents, mops, and gloves to the hospital

The event’s organizing committee chairperson, George Tambala said they thought of making the donation as one way of celebrating the festive season with the patients.
