Malawians Perishing, Dying at South Africa’s Lindela Camp

Malawians detained at Lindela camp in South Africa for illegal stay have sounded SOS to the Malawi government to come to their rescue, saying they are living in inhuman conditions and watch country men die.

“We are starving and many Malawians are dying because of lack of medical assistance,” said a Malawian who called from the camp.

He said he borrowed a phone and made the call from the toilet.

The detainees claim foreigners from Zimbabwe and Mozambique who were also arrested have been taken back to their countries by their governments.

But currently, claimed the caller, it is only Malawians who are yet to be ferried home.

“We have been seeking help from Malawi embassy but no response.”

There are about 1,800 Malawians at Lindela camp waiting to be ferried home.

Minister of foreign affairs, Mr Mganda Chiume could not pick up his phone for a comment but he is on record telling the media that government is engaging aggressive efforts to take the detainees home.

Many young Malawians trek to South Africa for opportunities but the land of gold ends up being a nightmare for them once apprehended by the authorities.
